Call for Artists – Installation Nation 2010

We’re pleased to announce that our newest event, Installation Nation, is returning this June. We’re once again inviting all contemporary artists with experience in creating installation art to submit proposals for consideration.

Applications are available now.

Project Overview

Artists will submit a proposal to create an installation piece within the confines of a 20-foot metal shipping container. From the submitted proposals, a panel will judge all completed entries based on their originality, execution and innovation. This year, they will select seven projects and give them each $750 to create their vision within the confines of a metal shipping container. Artists have until Tuesday, April 27, to submit them to us.

Artists may conceive and develop a piece free from any thematic or creative restrictions, and multiple artists may collaborate on a piece. The dimensions allotted for each piece are width: 8 feet, depth: 20 feet, height: 8 feet. Electricity will be available to power each selected installation piece. Selected artists must be available to set their installation up in Indianapolis during the week of the event, beginning Monday, May 31, 2010.

Pieces will highlight Installation Nation, a weekend exhibition taking place on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5, 2010. The event will also feature music, food, and drink.

  1. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will there be access from both ends of the shipping container?
    A: Yes.

Q: Will the structure be provided?
    A: Yes.

Q: What is meant by metal storage container? dumpster? trash can? safe?
A: We’ll be renting 20ft. metal shipping containers. Selected artists will each have a space of 8ft. high x 8ft. tall x 20 ft. deep to construct their piece.

Q: Are there any stipulations on the content of the proposal?
A: This event does not impose any theme or other creative restrictions on the artists. Artists must construct their installation piece within a metal storage container.

Q: What kind of medium should the proposal be in, could it be a rough sketch, or are you expecting more complete work?
A: Your proposal is considered complete if we have received all of these elements by the deadline:

    • A completed entry form
    • Your resume or bio
    • The project narrative, which can include pictures or sketches of your piece, anything to give our jury a good idea of what you’re trying to create
    • $20 submission fee

You can download an application form and complete rules here.

Q: When is the deadline for submitting a proposal?
A: Entries are due at Primary Colours office on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 5 p.m. EDT. Late entries will not be considered.

Q: Can I collaborate on a project with another artist?
A: Yes! You can collaborate with as many artists as you would like. The $750 stipend is given toward the project and not to each artists.

Q: Does my budget have to equal $750?
A: Certainly not. Budgeting your project will give you a better idea of how much cost will be involved in creating your work. You can spend more or less than $750. The stipend goes toward your project, but it doesn’t mean that you have to make your work for exactly $750.

Q: What can I do to help ensure I submit a winning proposal?
A: First, make sure you get us a complete entry! Entries with missing elements will be disqualified.

Next, make sure your proposal is original, well-executed, and innovative. That’s what we’ll be judging on.

The best tip we can give it to explain you project and your intent simply in clear language. Proposals that lay out exactly what the artist wants to communicate with the piece with a minimum of “art speak” will stand a much better chance. This artist’s blog entry has some great tips.

Q: My submission has been selected, why am I required to complete a Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number?

A: Your taxpayer identification number is required so that we may complete Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income, for any payments in excess of $600.

Q: Will the $750 I receive be reported to the IRS?

A: Yes, we are required to report to the IRS any payments to artists in excess of $600. We require all finalists complete a Form W-9. We will complete and mail Form 1099-MISC by the required filing dates.

Q: Can I pay the $20 entry fee with a credit card?

A: Sure, just use the Donate button on the Primary Colours website. (It’s in the top right corner.) Then attach a copy of your Paypal confirmation to your entry form.
