RULES SUMMARY

Each artist must use the provided brushes, paint, and canvas. He or she has up to four hours to complete a painting at the City Market in Indianapolis between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Participants will be charged $15 advance fee or $20 day of fee to compete. The general public is invited to watch the participants create their paintings for free.

Paintings will be numbered and posted on www.artvsart.net for online voting. The top 32 vote-getters will be prominently displayed when doors open at 8 p.m. E.D.T. on Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Vogue Theater during the Main Event.

At the Main Event, each ticketed attendee can select three favorite paintings. Only the top 16 vote-getters compete for $4,000 cash prize. Paintings that do not make the finals are subject to sale or destruction.

During the finals of the Main Event, two paintings at a time are randomly selected from the 16 finalists. Audience noise is measured with a decibel meter to determine each "bout" winner. Each painting that loses a bout will face destruction as determined by a spin of The Wheel of Death. A painting can only be saved from destruction if the highest bidder purchases it from a live auction after each bout. If the spin of The Wheel of Death results in “Instant Death,” the painting will be destroyed on the spot without an auction. Minimum bids increase with each round: Round 1: $150, Round 2: $250, Round 3: $350 and Round 4: $450. Artists receive 70% of the amount from the sale of their paintings.

The one painting to survive four bouts will be crowned the Art vs. Art 2010 Champion, and its artist will receive a check for $4,000, the Title Belt, and full bragging rights. It's a winner-take-all competition. There is no second place prize.

ART vs. ART 2011 OFFICIAL RULES & REGULATIONS
On the day of the painting competition (“Paint Day”), Primary Colours will provide the same materials to each artist who pays the registration fee of $15 advanced/$20 day of. These materials include one 18" x 24" canvas board; a set of brushes; acrylic paints in the colors red, blue, yellow, black, and white; water; paint trays; and paper towels. Absolutely no personal materials (brushes, paints, easels, etc.) are permitted. Artists are also not permitted to use stencils or rubbings on their canvas. If any such outside materials are used, the painting will be disqualified from the competition. Art vs. Art is a competition for all artists and needs to be fair for all participants. Artists may bring a sketch, picture, model, or other prop to paint from. Artists must be 21 or older on Paint Day.

On Paint Day, each artist has a maximum of four hours to complete his or her painting between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the Indianapolis City Market (222 E. Market St., Indianapolis, IN 46204). Every artist who receives a canvas must enter the painting in the competition. No bailing out!
Paintings will be identified by their assigned number (no names), until the final round auctions at the Main Event (September 30, 2011). Artists cannot sign the front of their paintings.

Once an artist has completed and turned in his or her painting, Primary Colours will photograph the painting and post it online at artvsart.net. Online voting will take place between Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 until Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 at 5 p.m. (EDT). The top 32 vote-getters will be displayed at the day of competition (“Main Event”). Artists will not be informed beforehand which paintings have made the first cut prior to entering the event.

The Main Event takes place on Sept. 30, 2011, at the Vogue Theatre (6259 N. College Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46220). Each ticketed admission to the event will receive a ballot to vote for that attendee’s three favorite paintings. Votes will be cast between 8 pm and 9:30 pm. The 16 paintings with the most balloted votes that evening will compete for the $4,000 Grand Prize. Artists must be present at the Main Event to win.

All paintings not comprising the top 32 will be put up for sale for the duration of the Main Event for $50. If any painting doesn’t sell, it will be destroyed. Of the top 32 paintings, the 16 paintings that don’t make the final cut will be sold for $100. If any painting doesn’t sell, it will be destroyed.

Art vs. Art is a single-elimination tournament with a total of four rounds. The judging process is a bout that pits two randomly selected paintings head-to-head for the audience to judge. Round One has eight bouts, narrowing the field of 16 paintings to eight. Round Two has four bouts, narrowing the field from eight paintings to four. Round Three has two bouts, narrowing the four remaining paintings down to the final two. Round Four determines the Grand Prize winner from the final two.

The emcee points to the first painting and then to the other. The audience casts its preference by applause, noise, and cheers, which are determined by a digital decibel reader (measuring to the tenth of a decibel). The digital decibel reader is prominently displayed so that the audience can see the live sound level. The painting receiving the loudest audience applause (highest decibel level) wins the bout and advances to the next round of judging.

Bout winners advance to the next round of judging. Losing paintings face the possibility of destruction! Losing paintings are placed on the chopping block. The emcee will spin of The Wheel of Death to determine a mode of destruction (chain saw, baseball bat, etc.). Modes of destruction vary.

Once The Wheel determines a mode of destruction, only an audience member’s purchase of that painting can save it. An auction to the highest bidder determines the buyer of the painting. Minimum bids increase with each round: $150 in Round One, $250 in Round Two, $350 in Round Three, $450 in Round Four for the final two. All transactions (cash, Visa, or MasterCard only) must take place immediately. Otherwise, the painting will be destroyed. If no one is willing to purchase the painting at auction, it is destroyed.

***IMPORTANT***

One section on the Wheel of Death is "Instant Death." If a spin results in Instant Death, there is no way to save the painting from destruction. No auction ensues. The painting will be destroyed on the spot.

The artist of the winning painting wins the Grand Prize and a check for $4,000. The emcee then gives him or her the option to take possession of the painting or put it up for auction to the highest bidder, recognizing that if the Wheel of Death results in an Instant Death, the painting will be destroyed on the spot without an auction. The winner will also receive a traveling trophy, the Title Belt, which he or she can keep for one year, but must surrender before the start of the Art vs. Art 2011 Main Event.

All paintings and materials remain the property of Primary Colours until they are purchased. Artist will receive 70% from the sale of any painting.

Primary Colours aims to create a fair and fun competition for all participating artists. All rules and regulations will be fully enforced and may change at Primary Colours’ discretion. Before artists are given materials, they are required to sign this form stating that they have read and understand the 2011 rules. Artists will receive a copy of this document for their records.
